Scripture:
Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours: Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 1:1-11 NIV)
Observation:
We come to knowledge of Him as we learn of Him through His Word, through prayer, and through the community of God’s people. It is true that we need God alone, but God does not meet us only in our solitude but also in the community of His people. This knowledge of God comes to those who are called. It is knowledge, but it is not mere intellectual understanding or intuition. It is the knowledge that comes by experience – the experience God’s people have of God Himself. We are partakers of the divine nature, but once we are made spiritual sons and daughters, growth in the Christian life doesn’t just happen to us. We are supposed to give all diligence to our walk with the Lord. We begin our life with God with faith, but faith progresses into virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love – love being the capstone of all God’s work in us. These beautiful qualities are not things that the Lord simply pours into us as we passively receive. Instead, we are called to give all diligence to these things, working in partnership with God to add them. As we see these things in our life, we know that our lives are becoming more like the nature of Jesus. It shows that we are being conformed to the image of His Son (Romans 8:29). It is possible for an unsaved person to do many moral and religious duties. But the “these things” Peter wrote of are matters of the heart, and should be evident in anyone born again. Simply said, if we are called, if we are elect, then we are born again – and if we are born again, it shows in the way that we live. In pursuing these things, we keep from stumbling. Continual growth and progress in the Christian life is the sure way to keep from stumbling. (Enduring Word Bible Commentary)
Application:
The Christian life is a journey of continuous growth and transformation. As 2 Peter 1:5-7 highlights, believers are encouraged to add to their faith virtues such as goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, and love. This progression reflects the dynamic nature of spiritual maturity, where faith is not stagnant but deepens through intentional practice and reliance on God. Galatians 6:9 reminds us not to grow weary in doing good, because in due time, we will reap the rewards if we remain steadfast. The Christian walk is not always easy, but it is deeply rewarding, shaping us into reflections of Christ’s love and character. Romans 8:29 aligns with the idea that we are being conformed to the image of Christ. The Christian life is not just about outward actions but about a deep, inward transformation that reflects God’s nature. While moral and religious duties can be performed by anyone, true spiritual growth is a matter of the heart, evident in the way we live and love.
Prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus Christ, Thank You for the fresh hope You have blessed me with. You are a merciful, gracious, and loving God, and I am deeply grateful for Your unwavering love and faithfulness. I humbly ask for Your forgiveness for the times I have allowed the distractions of this world to pull me away from my true calling—to become more like You each day and to rely on You in all that I do, whether great or small. Lord, help me to live a life that is blameless and pure. Grant me wisdom, strength, and joy as I walk in obedience to Your will. May Your light and love shine through me—in my words, my actions, and my thoughts—so that I may glorify Your name in every season of life, whether in times of joy or in moments of struggle. I surrender my heart to You, Lord. Shape me, refine me, and guide me, that I may grow in faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, kindness, and love. May my life be a reflection of Your grace, and may I never cease to praise You for as long as I live. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
